 THE NEWSLETTER OF WAIUKU AFC

A day to forget

Well, I guess we should say something about derby day at Pukekohe.
It started promisingly enough, with the Third team looking ok and the Prems cutting a swathe through Pukekohe to create some early chances. Then the wheels fell off.

When the dust had settled, Pukekohe had beaten the Prems 4-1, the Thirds 2-1, managed a draw with the Mens Reserves, a 1-0 win over Waiuku’s womens reserves and were down a goal against our Womens Prems when the game was abandoned due to an injury.
It was a rout, and the only consolation for the Prems was that if we are ever to have a bad game, at least it didn’t have championship points riding on it.

As the local papers reported – it’s a good wake-up call ahead of the April 14 season openers.
And as Forrest Gump would say – that’s all I got to say about thayat.

Yay – the season’s about to start!

The draws are out and there’s four home games on the first weekend of play.
Unfortunately, despite our begging and pleading, we haven’t been able to secure the Mens reserves playing ahead of the Prems with any regularity, and the first week sees the reserves and the Over-35s away. On the bright side, it means the Fat Controller may get a chance to lace up his flash new boots for the Third team before the Prems.

Speaking of the Kentish Hotel Premiers, they kick off with a real toughie – Eastern Suburbs. It was nip and tuck between us and Suburbs for the silver medal last year and home points will be vital for the championship ahead of what looks like the strongest Super Division competition ever.
Our lads will be looking for a strong performance to erase memories of Derby day and matches between these two clubs are always great viewing. Bring a crowd down and let’s set up a terrific start to the season.
Third team plays at 1.00pm, Prems at 2.45.

Sunday sees both ladies teams in action with an 11.00am kickoff for the reserves and 12.30pm for the Prems. These sides are looking good early in the season and should provide some fine entertainment and hopefully complete a solid start to the medal hunt on the first day.

Matchday sponsorship available for first round

With the draws only coming out yesterday, we haven’t had a chance to allocate the available Matchday sponsorship packages for our corporate supporters.

Full info on the Premier sponsorships for the season will be posted to sponsors over the next week, but initially, the first home game is available.

It will be first-in, first served, so if you want to be the Matchday sponsor for Matchday One, call Nigel on 235 8735 or email waiuku.editorial@xtra.co.nz

What you get:

Package is for up to six people; reserved table and seating on the deck (or inside if the weather isn’t kind); two bottles of bubbly on arrival, finger food at half time of main game, complimentary round of drinks, listing in programme as Matchday Sponsor and full page ad plus full page editorial profile on your company. (Copy needs to be supplied to Nigel by Wednesday prior to match).
You can erect promotional material and signage at the ground plus display promotional material in the club. You will also be introduced at the clubrooms after the match, will present the player of the day prize for the Waiuku Premier player of the day, and receive a ball signed by the team.
It’s a good chance for some local exposure for your company, a nice outing for your staff or friends, and a bit of fun.
Package cost: $155.00 plus player of the day prize (gift basket or similar product at suggested value of $40).

Personal – Man seeks other Men

It’s make or break time for the Over-35s

Yes, the Over-35s STILL need more players. If you’re a bloke who fits the above description, get in contact and have a great season with the lads.
I think there might be a special subs offer for those broken-down former stars who keep defying the sands of time to bring further glory to Waiuku.
At this rate, I’ll end up playing and believe me, that’s the last thing Waiuku wants or needs!

I think we are looking for about five more players to make it viable. I know they are out there so ring your mates or your granddad.

There is a muster NEXT TUESDAY night at the club at 6.30pm for Over-35s. You are not expected to train if you don’t want to and the bar will be open but PLEASE turn up. If we don’t have the numbers by that night it’s over for the season.

Subs and registrations – keep them coming in!

As always, keep the subs coming in, and have a word to any mates you have about having a run for Waiuku this year. The mens third team and the Over-35s always need more players.

The mens prems and reserves train Tuesdays and Thursdays, 6.30pm at George Street, but we’ve had a few from other teams join us and all are welcome.

There will be a list of registered players available at the club from next Tuesday so check that you are eligible to play before the season kicks off, especially those players who are new regos or who have seen the light and transferred from some other club.

Featured sponsor – Williams IT Solutions

This week’s featured sponsor is the lads at Williams IT. Their sponsored player is Dale Oliver – who has been collecting player of the day titles with regularity lately. You can reach Williams IT on 021 758 506.

With more than 25 years of combined experience in computer and telecommunications technology, Waiuku’s Dave Williams and Martin Chapman have joined forces to create Williams IT Solutions. The pair emphasise that ‘solutions’ is all about their approach to the business, through a combination of their own expertise and a network of contacts that covers almost every aspect of IT (information technology).
Dave’s family have been in the local district for ‘around six generations’ and his speciality is telecommunications, particularly networking and broadband technology.

Martin’s background saw him build a career overseas in industrial automation, and as that business grew steadily more computer-focused, his speciality became integrating machines into a PC network for data analysis. Databasing, and customer loyalty and support programmes, are a rapidly growing area of the field, and Williams IT Solutions have formed a business partnership with some of the leaders in the field — Smart Minds — to make this technology available to local clients.

Core business for Dave and Martin are home-based businesses, small-to-medium companies and the personal networking market.
The pair are able to design the network and provide a turn-key solution to a computer and telecommunications network. Williams IT Solutions can supply hardware, recommend or design software, and supply the entire required package to make the process as simple as possible for the end user.

“That’s why it’s all about solutions,” Martin says, pointing out that the process of setting up or redeveloping a business can often mean the client is dealing with several different suppliers, all with differing time lines. By using Williams IT Solutions, the process is co-ordinated, meaning a simpler installation process, plus in many cases a single call for back-up service and support. The business is predominately mobile, with Martin and Dave on the road serving their clients’ requirements and they say they are more than happy to make site visits to discuss options with clients.

Networking a telecommunications and computer system, until relatively recently, was something only big business did; now there are real benefits for homeowners as well, and at a price which many people find surprisingly low. An illustration of the benefits would be a home with perhaps three personal computers, all with individual printers, and only one able to connect to the internet.
Williams IT Solutions can network the system, meaning the computers can all ‘talk’ to each other, share a common printer, and all can use the internet. In the majority of cases the networking can be achieved through wireless technology, which removes messy cables and wires from the home.

With a service that covers the range of IT requirements, and the local knowledge to best support the local people, Williams IT Solutions is committed to providing the very best solutions for Franklin.

Ask Robbie! – Questions and answers from last newsletter

Dear Robbie

Being an avid soccer fan over the years I have noticed that successful teams always had the big, slow geezer with the silly haircut at the back.
Gordon McQueen, Alan Hansen, Steve Bruce, Laurent Blanc to name a few.
Obviously having a certain smaller geezer, still with no pace and a silly haircut, at the back has not helped Waiuku over the years, I wont use Jim’s name as that’s not nice.

Do you feel this is why Waiuku are doing so well at the moment?
