Reserves winning form continues

On Saturday Waiuku Reserves travelled to Centre Park to face Mangere Reserves in the third game of their Northern reserve league campaign. After the previous weeks win against Pukekohe the confidence in the team was high going into this fixture.

The game started off as expected with the always energetic Mangere players giving the Waiuku mid field no time on the ball whatsoever. Adapting well to this Waiuku started to move the ball around well and it wasn’t long before chances were being created with the help of some calm distribution from Charlie Heather playing in the deep attacking role this week. On the 30 minute mark the Mangere defence was caught out by a long throw from centre back Rob Hatton into the box. Heather received the ball and tried to lob the keeper but only managed to hit the cross bar. Left mid fielder Dom Winter was first to the rebound and calmly put the ball away. One goal to nil for Waiuku going into the half time break.
The second half kicked off with Mangere showing a bit more urgency in going forward and 10 minutes in they broke free of the Waiuku defence with a ball across the box. The striker running on connected well with the ball but Waiuku keeper Vincent ‘wobbles’ Reibold pulled off a fantastic save high to his right to deny the striker his chance. This was obviously a game turning moment because Waiuku instantly went on the attack and Mitchell Thomasen put a long ball through to Heather who in turn crossed the ball over the Mangere keeper finding Winter at the far post to head home his second of the game. The cracks were beginning to show in the Mangere team now and only 10 minutes later Charlie Heather intercepted a poor pass, took on one defender and fired the ball low passed the keeper. Mangere began to get physical and both Mitchell Thomasen and Luke Sutton had to come off with rib injuries, being replaced by Caine Robbie and Chris Mahoney. Mangere’s questionable challenges went against them, giving away a free kick on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick saw Heather hit the post and across the goal mouth and resulted in a bizarre scramble between 3 Waiuku players ending with captain Dave Johnson cheekily back heeling the ball into the net. Four nil to Waiuku at full time.
After the game Waiuku coach Jason Heather said it was a good performance by the lads, they did everything that I asked them and that little bit more. The result was a fair reflection of the game and will set us up well for next game against Papakura in a weeks time. Player of the day went to Scott Petersen who kept his cool at the back, organizing well and making the important challenges.
In a weird twist Waiuku were awarded maximum points for their first game loss against Western Springs when it was discovered that they played an unregistered player. These points coupled with the two good wins puts Waiuku reserves at the top of the reserve league table and in a great position to continue the season.
