Waiuku snatch draw in Cambridge

Waiuku travelled to Cambridge on Easter Monday with an opportunity to get all six points from their travels. However after a very entertaining game both sides shared a point with a 3-3 draw. Waiuku were without two of their most experienced players for this one with both Derek Sinclair and Wayne Trout having to miss the trip. Rob Hatton came in for his starting debut while Simon Millynn again came in up front.

Cambridge were fired up for this game with many supporters crowded around the pitch. This seemed to work as they got on the scoreboard first when the Waiuku defense left Blair Cooper with a free header inside the six yard box. Waiuku equalised when Danny Baldwin played a superb ball through to Cody Ralph who got in between the keeper and the defense and slotted home.

The second half started with Waiuku pushing forward. Sam van Pomeron had a goal disallowed for offside even though the linesman flag stayed down. Cambridge went up the other end and scored when Gareth Clark found space inside the six yard box and gave Justin Baldwin no chance. Then Cambridge were awarded a very soft penalty when Hatton was judged to of pushed Cooper in the back and Matt Harper made no mistake from the box.

The ninety minute mark went by and Waiuku looked out of the game. However the ref awarded eight minutes injury time due to injuries and time wasting and Waiuku struck back. First a long Hatton throw made its way to Robbie Leonard to slam home and with the last kick of the game Baldwin scored a header off a great Mitchell Thomasen cross.

Coach Jim Evans was grateful for the point "Cambridge definitely seemed to want it a bit more and we seemed a bit flat after a hard game on Saturday. However we never gave up and got a result when it looked like we were going to miss out. Credit has to go to the boys for not giving up. Danny Baldwin was man of the match."

Waiuku are at home next Saturday against Papakura.
