Waiuku mens reserves took on Papakura City in the opening game at Massey Park on Saturday. A game which proved to be a hot affair, with Papakura winless and Waiuku chasing a forth straight win. With the first team and reserves hampered by injuries and absences coach Jason Heather was forced to make some changes to positions and personnel. Jesse Smyth-Kirk was called up from the development squad and Robbie Thornton came out of retirement to help out.
The game started at a furious pace and only 8 minutes in Papakura were awarded a free kick on the edge of the penalty box. The resulting shot was placed perfectly into the top corner, out of reach of keeper Vincent Reibold. It wasnt long before Waiuku had the perfect reply when Owen Hill put Charlie Heather clear down the left flank, Heather crossed the ball finding Dave Johnson at the far post and firing into the top of the net. Papakura started to dominate and 10 minutes later scored from a cross after the Waiuku defence were drawn towards the ball. Papakura never took their foot off the pedal and were rewarded when the striker beat two defenders and put the ball past the keeper. Waiuku were by no means out of the running and just before half time Hill and Heather linked up again to provide Jesse Smyth-Kirk with a pass into the box, turning beautifully he put a bullet shot into the back of the net.
Papakura came out firing in the second half and hit the crossbar twice in the first ten minutes. This proved to Waiuku that they were going to have to fight for everything and stepped up the pace to get back into the game. The next 30 minutes was end to end stuff with both teams sharing possession and going on the attack. The deciding moment came when Smyth-Kirk broke free in the box but was taken down to earn Waiuku a penalty. Charlie Heather stepped up to the spot and calmly put the ball in the net sending the keeper the wrong way. Both teams pressed for the winner and Waiuku came closest when a through ball from Heather found Smyth-Kirk one on one with the keeper but shot just wide. The match ended 3 3 but it wasnt for a lack of trying from both teams.
After the game coach Jason Heather said it was a fair result as both teams were evenly matched. However if we had a full squad to choose from thing would have been very different. I played quite a few players out of position and asked others to go the extra mile with regards to fitness. Player of the day goes to Jesse Smyth-Kirk. He never gave up and was rewarded with a great goal.
