Waiuku get hard fought point in reserve match

Saturday saw the visit to Massey Park of North Force Reserves. A Whangarei club with good depth and a youth policy much like Waiuku. With the return of some injured players to the Waiuku first team and the welcome return of Luke Dillon to the reserves, coach Jason Heather had a few more players to call upon this week.

The game started well with both teams looking sharp and with 20 minutes gone it was North Force who took the early lead. A break away down the right side of the park saw the young Force winger charge into the Waiuku box and release an early shot beating keeper Vince Reibold at the near post. Waiuku were still very much in the game and not long after Luke Sutton intercepted a back pass and pulled the ball back to Charlie Heather who curled the ball over the defense but only managed to hit the post. Waiuku countered again with shots from Heather and Jason Oliver but went into the break one goal down.
North Force came out in the second half with the clear intention to try and put the game out of the reach of Waiuku. The sustained pressure went on for most of the half with the home side rarely breaking forward. With this in mind, coach Jason Heather replaced Robbie Thornton with Luke Dillon in the centre of the park. This coupled with Charlie Heather dropping deep helped to gain control again. Waiuku gradually fought their way back into the game and the break came 3 minutes from time. A cross into the box from Owen Hill found Rob Hatton who’s header was deflected away from the target, the ball fell into the path of Dom Winter who fired a bullet shot across the keeper and inside the far post. His forth goal in as many games. The game ended one all.
After the game coach Jason Heather said “I think it was a fair result. The lads deserved a draw with the way they held their ground and kept their composure before fighting back so well. I’m particularly happy with the younger players, they’ve stepped up to quite an experienced league and have adapted well. Dom Winter is scoring well and has a big future in football. Charlie Heather got player of the day”.
