Waiuku down Western Springs

Waiuku kicked off their season by gaining all three points against Western Springs on Saturday. Much has been said of the younger players involved with the first team this year and 17 year olds Dom Winter and Mitch Thomasen took the most of their opportunities with solid performances.

After a disappointing start last week, Waiuku spent the first ten minutes settling into their defensive patterns as Springs had a lot of the ball but rarely threatened. Then Waiuku took control with some good work down the left with Winter and Simon Millynn combining to set up Derek Sinclair who drew a good save from the keeper. The midfield trio of captain Jerry Hubbard, Sam van Pomeron and Robbie Leonard were winning everything in the air which kept the pressure on the Springs back four. Waiuku went ahead when Millynn got free on the left and squared to Shane Godden who finished at the second attempt.

Waiuku were in control but they gave away a silly corner and Springs equalised directly from the spot to get back in the game. Five minutes before halftime though Waiuku were again in the lead. A pass from Darren Woolnough found Sinclair in space and he made no mistake as he slotted in the bottom right hand corner.

Springs came out in the second half looking for an equaliser and went close with a couple of long range drives, one of the rebounding from the crossbar with Phil van den Broek beaten. Waiuku gained back dominance and came close to securing the game on numerous occasions but the ball kept evading the back of the net. Godden went close to doubling his tally when he slammed the ball into the back of the net but was somehow adjudged to of fouled his marker. However Waiuku did get the third goal they were looking for when Thomasen broke into some space on the right and delivered a perfect ball to Sinclair who superbly finished.

Coach Jim Evans was happy with the way his team played "We were short this week and didnt even have a fresh sub. Plus Sinclair was only 70% fit as he pulled his hamstring last week but it shows the measure of the man to pull on the shirt and play for his team mates. But the heart and the attitude was excellent. We were solid for 80 minutes and it was a disappointing goal to give away because they really didnt look like scoring and we let them back in the game. The younger players were absolutely outstanding and Winter got man of the match in his first game for the team"

Waiuku are home again next week against large spending Mt Albert who are favourites for the title.
