Waiuku take the points off Cambridge

Waiuku won for the first time in three years at Cambridge on Saturday but it was a close encounter that could of gone either way. It was a good spectacle with fast paced end to end football which created many chances for both teams.

Waiuku are bleeding through some young talent this year and they showed their stuff in the first fifteen minutes and with a bit of luck and some better finishing could of been three up within this time. Shane Godden had a couple of one on ones with the goalkeeper that went narrowly wide and a Cambridge clearance came off the bar. However after keeping Waiuku out, Cambridge grew in confidence and made some chances of their own. A direct free kick went narrowly over the top and a succession of corners for the home side prompted some last ditch defending. The middle of the park was a battle zone with Cambridge coming out on top in the first half but it was Waiuku that took the lead when a Charlie Heather corner was not cleared and Jamie Pegg tucked the loose ball home.

The game continued at its fast pace in the second half with both sides again going close. Cambridge equalised when Elliot Crean headed the ball back to Trent Hirst in goal under pressure and Dan Podjursky took the ball away from Hirst and popped it into the empty net. Waiuku brought on 17 year old Luke Sutton and Danny Baldwin into the fray and immediately went ahead. After a succession of Waiuku corners, young Sutton headed the ball into the goal. Another Waiuku corner saw Baldwin get his first goal of the season with a near post header.

Cambridge didnt give up and when they broke into the box, they were awarded a penalty which Denis Commins scored from to make it 3-2. Baldwin hit the post and Pegg went narrowly wide, while 17 year old Mitchel Thomasen made a run from the right back position into the penalty box and his effort went wide also. However Pegg sealed the deal when he went one on one with the Cambridge goalkeeper and rolled it over the line.

Coach Jim Evans was content with the display "The young players are getting used to the pace at this level and while we are still making errors they are learning every week. We haven't won here for a few years and we knew that it would be a battle out there so happy to get the win. I think our bench made the difference today. Man of the match was Luke Sutton."

Waiuku are home to Papakura next Saturday in the first Franklin derby of the season.
