Following Saturday's outstanding victories from two of the Waiuku men's teams, both the club's women's sides polished off the weekend with style on their home ground. The Reserves took out a 1-0 win over Papakura, while the Premiers beat Eastern Suburbs 4-2.
Leila Van Groenewoud claimed the only goal of the Reserves' match, in the first half. Coach Dale Oliver joint-awarded Player of the Day to Rozlyn Gielink, who played goalkeeper for most of the game, and centre back Cathryn Musham.
In the Premiers' match captain Sandie Ralph scored the ice-breaker goal off a direct free kick in the first 10 minutes. Gemma Gouwland took goal number two, a tremendous shot taken under pressure from the Suburbs defence. The third was a well-controlled ground ball slotted past the keeper by Ashley Raynes, after a corner kick in the second half. Gemma rounded off Waiuku's total with her second goal of the match, a superb strike from a near-impossible angle. While the opposition did claw back two goals of their own, coach Cody Ralph was pleased with the team's overall performance and third convincing win from four matches.
All in all it was a strong weekend across the board for Waiuku Soccer. Long may the Blues' successes continue!
