Waiuku still 5th despite draw in Cambridge

Waiuku travelled to Cambridge on a very cold, wet and windy Saturday afternoon knowing that three points may put them into second place of the table. However the dreaded injury curse struck the team again and in the end the Waiuku coaching staff were happy to walk away with a point in a very attacking 0-0 draw.

Caine Robbie started his first game for the premiers with Vaughan Banfield starting in midfield. The game was very even in the first half with both teams having chances. Jesse Smyth Kirk nearly put his team in front when he was put through by Sam van Pomeron but tried to play a pass rather then shoot. Cambridge also came close a couple of times but either shot narrowly wide or Justin Baldwin in goal kept them at bay.

The second half was all Cambridge though as they pushed hard for the winner. Stout defending from Waiuku led by outstanding vice captain Jerry Hubbard and some brilliance from goalkeeper Baldwin kept them at bay. Baldwin reacted well when he got down to his left to push clear a right angled drive and the next time Cambridge had an opportunity they shot wide when it was probably easier to score. Waiuku were attacking on the break and both Daniel Baldwin and Charlie Heather went close with a couple of long shots but it was Cambridge who were looking more likely as Baldwin tipped a 25 metre drive over the bar and then came out to save a one on one with the Cambridge attacker.

Coach Jim Evans was happy with the point. "This is a hard place to come and you can see from Cambridge's results that they are hard to beat at home. We only travelled with 12 players due to the injuries and they stood up and did me proud by battling hard for the result. Even though we didnt play well it is nice to walk away with something. Justin Baldwin was man of the match with an exceptional display but Robbie and van Pomeron were good as well."

The Cambridge coach was disappointed "If the strikers had their goalscoring boots on today we would of won. The team are playing good football and we had a great result at Ngarawahia last week that shows that we can play. Today we just didnt find the back of the net"

Team: Justin Baldwin, Caine Robbie, Jerry Hubbard (vc), Grant Muckle, Vaughan Banfield, Wayne Trout, Sam van Pomeron, Danny Baldwin, Jamie Pegg, Cody Ralph, Jesse Smyth Kirk (Charlie Heather 80)
