Waiuku Women's Premiers Confirm Place at Top of Table

The Waiuku Women's Premiers have finally topped the table fair and square this weekend, with a narrow 1-0 victory over rivals Onehunga, at Massey Park.

The ladies faced almost every kind of weather in the space of 90 minutes, but pulled together well in spite of this, producing plenty of beautiful team play. Many players were called upon to play in multiple positions throughout the match, but each and every person stepped up wherever they were required. The only goal of the game was claimed by the Blues in the first 15 minutes, when tidy play through the midfield allowed left winger Teresa Thom to deliver a switch-ball to Jacqui David near the corner of the 18 yard box. David seized the opportunity to put in a solid shot, which bounced off the crossbar but was followed up and put in the back of the net by striker Desiree Rickard.

While the first half was clearly dominated by Waiuku, the opposition certainly did not roll over and let them have the win without a fight in the second half. Onehunga had their share of close calls in the Waiuku goalbox, but thanks to the outstanding efforts of goalkeeper Vickilee Watson, the Blues managed to cling to their one-goal lead for the remainer of the game.

In the after-match speeches, coach Cody Ralph was full of praise for the performances and attitudes of all the players on both sides, but Watson was Waiuku's undisputed Player of Day. Congratulations to the Blues for a superb result that has, for now at least, secured them the top spot in Division 2.
