Waiuku Prems Hit Western Springs for Six

The Wolf and Beaver Waiuku Premiers are one step closer in their quest to become Division 2 champions after an emphatic 6 0 win over Western Springs at Massey Park on Saturday. With top goal scorer Cody Ralph suspended and right back Andy Millynn unavailable some changes were needed. Jamie Pegg and Elliot Crean were called in to fill the gaps.

Waiuku got off to the perfect start when only 5 minutes into the game they went ahead when Wayne Trout climbed at the back post to head home a Shane Godden corner. Only moments later the ball was in the back of the net again but this time disallowed when Danny Baldwin was adjudged to have been off-side, a very dubious decision as Baldwin had to run around a Western Springs defender to get his shot away. Western Springs rallied and fought their way back into the game but didn’t really trouble the Waiuku goal, star striker Leo Berlim being kept under control by the strong Waiuku defense.
The second half started in much the same way and some clumsy defending saw Shane Godden brought down in the box. The referee pointed to the penalty spot and Godden stepped up to convert the spot kick doubling the lead. Western Springs couldn’t cope with the constant pressure and 5 minutes later Godden was again hacked down in the box. Converting his second penalty things were looking good for Waiuku. On a few occasions keeper Justin Baldwin was called into action but gathered well every time. On the seventy minute mark, striker Derek Sinclair found himself through on goal and easily beat the keeper, however the ball struck the post. With the visitors defense nowhere to be seen, Jamie Peg ran in to put the ball into an open goal. Shane Godden wasn’t finished and soon after latched onto a through ball from Sinclair, placing the ball low past the keeper his hat-trick was complete. With 10 minutes remaining Charlie Heather was brought on to replace Sam Van Pomeren and instantly made an impact on the game. Yet another shot from Sinclair was parried by the Western Springs keeper, Heather was first to it and smashed the ball into the roof of the net, visibly elated after scoring twice in the previous reserves game and netting his first for the premiers. The game ended 6 0 with Waiuku sending out a strong message to their remaining 3 opponents.
After the game Coach Jim Evans said "I’m really proud of the attitude and commitment shown out there today. To score 6 against a top side is very pleasing but I am just as happy with the defensive effort put in by the whole team. Man of the match is Shane Godden who scored a hat-trick and set two goals up."
Next week Waiuku travel just down the road to face Pukekohe in a Franklin derby which is always an interesting match. Kick off is 2:45 at Bledisloe Park.
