Waiuku took on second placed Onehunga Mangere on Saturday looking to extend their unbeaten run. In a game which saw two very attacking teams in the league go head to head, Waiuku came out the other end with all three points winning the game 2-0.
Waiuku started strongest and Jesse Smyth Kirk nearly gave Waiuku the lead with a bicycle kick that Onehunga Mangere goalkeeper Glen Pascoe managed to tip on to the post with a diving one handed save. Onehunga Mangere possess two of the leagues highest goalscorers in Dean Delaney and Kuysoke Kitano, the Japanese import, who also took out player of the month for April. However Waiuku's defense marshalled by Jerry Hubbard were keeping the opposition attackers shooting from distance. The defence didnt miss a beat even when David Johnson was substituted early on when he landed badly on his shoulder allowing Joe Rayson the opportunity to enter the fray.
Waiuku took the lead after Wayne Trout fed a pass to Smyth Kirk who turned and passed into the path of Danny Baldwin who beat the oncoming Pascoe for his fourth of the season. The game continued to go from end to end at a very fast pace which provided some entertainment for the supporters who came to watch. However both teams were guilty of not making the final pass stick.
Onehunga Mangere changed things round in the second half moving playmaker Charlie Rewha into a more attacking position and bringing on Sangster Crawford and Abraham Turner. However Waiuku were the first to attack and nearly took the lead when a Jamie Pegg cross found Trout at the back post who shot narrowly wide. Onehunga Mangere nearly drew level when a shot from Steve May hit the post and the rebound was missed completely by Delaney who looked odds on to score. Waiuku changed their formation after that to close the game out and Sam Van Pomeron nearly doubled their advantage after a mazy run into the penalty box was closed out before he had a chance to shoot. However Waiuku did wrap up all three points when Cody Ralph crossed from the left and Smyth Kirk headed home from a tight angle.
Waiuku coach Jim Evans was happy with the points "First of all I thought the referees had a great game today as they let the game play on as much as they could which allowed for a very attacking game. We have showed today that we can match it and we just need to keep believing in ourselves as we can be as good as we want to be. Man of the match today is shared between Hubbard and Pegg for an outstanding display."
The Onehunga Mangere coach told the clubrooms that this is the way football goes sometimes "We knew Waiuku would throw out an attacking side. The result could of gone either way but we didnt take our chances and Waiuku did. Man of the match goes to Turner"
Waiuku now take on two teams next weekend with a trip to Cambridge on the Saturday. On the Monday they host Premier team Papatoetoe in the next installment of the Chatham Cup.
