Waiuku were knocked out of the Chatham Cup by Premier team Papatoetoe on Queens Birthday Monday however it was closer than the result showed. Waiuku took this as an opportunity to compare themselves with the division above as they strive to try and claim the second place in the league which will give them an opportunity to get promoted.
With the second game in three days, Waiuku started Charlie Heather in place of Smyth Kirk who had an ankle knock from the Saturday game while they still had several players out with injury. However the Waiuku team didnt look out of place and matched the opposition in the early stages of the game. So much so they took the lead in the 20th minute. A through ball was chased down by Daniel Baldwin but his shot was saved by the Papatoetoe keeper Robbie Graham but the ball fell to Sam van Pomeron who put it back into the path of Heather who smacked it into the roof of the net. Papatoetoe kept probing out wide with winger Fadeel Khan causing some problems and Waiuku started to help their cause with some careless defending. Papatoetoe equalised from a corner kick. The corner was met at the near post by Reece Day but his effort was cleared off the line by Vaughan Banfield only for the rebound to fall straight back to Day who made no mistake with his second effort.
The second half saw Waiuku start the brightest with Danny Baldwin and Wayne Trout causing problems moving forward. A Waiuku corner was cleared out to Banfield who shot at goal from 25 yards only to see his effort cannon off the cross bar. Then on the 60 minute mark came the turning point in the game that Papatoetoe was looking for. Papatoetoe brought on Iwa Shaker and he made an immediate impact when a ball from the left was floated into the area with Shaker clashing with Jerry Hubbard and hitting the deck. Referee Wayne Scott pointed to the spot which was a harsh decision as Hubbard had his eyes firmly on the ball. However Chris Dale made no mistake with his penalty kick and in the mayhem goalkeeper Justin Baldwin was booked for kicking the ball away.
This meant Waiuku had to push forward to equalise and they nearly did so when a Danny Baldwin freekick was nodded on by Hubbard but his effort was cleared off the line. Justin Baldwin got down and made a fantastic save but there was nothing he could do with the third goal. Grant Muckle played a square ball to Scott Petersen but the Papatoetoe striker was first to the ball and when he played in Shaker he finished from close range. Game over and Papatoetoe were winners 3-1 on the day
Coach Jim Evans was happy with his teams efforts" We let in three soft goals today which we dont usually do and we paid the price. However it was nice to see that in terms of football ability there was no difference between us and Papatoetoe which will give us confidence. If we had a bit more luck we would of finished winners today."
