Waiuku trampled by high flying Mt Albert

Waiuku travelled to Mt Albert in the weekend in a game which was meant to be close in terms of positions in the league table. Waiuku went into this game in 6th position with Mt Albert in 7th position only two points back. However Mt Albert dominated in a very open and attacking game with USA scholarship player Colin Murphy playing his first game of the season along with Premier League player Jared Colligan who had transferred back from Bay Olympic. Mt Albert had made a slow start to the season due to some injuries halfway through the first round but now Waiuku had their backs to the wall with 4 players sitting on the sidelines.

Mt Albert showed their intent as early as the 9th minute when Craig Taylor took on and beat Scott Petersen who was playing his first game for the Waiuku team. He dribbled past Petersen and into the box and slotted past Baldwin to put his team up 1-0. He took his goalscoring tally to 2 shortly after Murphy beat Cody Ralph on the right and played an unplayable ball behind the Waiuku defence allowing Taylor an easy tap in. Murphy and Taylor were causing real problems out wide and again Murphy got a ball into the box which Nick Snedden headed into the far corner and the crowd witnessed an action replay however this time debutant Colligan slotted home. Waiuku were playing their part of the game as well and Sinclair who was back from injury raced away from the Mt Albert defence twice. The first time the keeper got down and saved with his feet, the second time he made no mistake. Sam van Pomeron and Vaughan Banfield both went close from long range.

The second half saw Waiuku come back fighting. Waiuku scored first when a Wayne Trout header was brought down by Sinclair and sidefooted home. Then again Sinclair went close with his shot being saved off the line and then the keeper make a last ditch attempt to save another one. Just when Waiuku looked as though they were getting momentum, Colligan scored a screamer. The Waiuku defence held off the attacker and he fired from thirty yards into the top right hand corner giving Baldwin in goal no chance. Then the flood gates opened as the game went from end to end. Colligan smashed another effort home from the left while Murphy also got on the score sheet. Then it was Waiuku turn straight from the kick off. Trout played Sinclair through but the keeper saved with one hand and Danny Baldwin made no mistake. Waiuku nearly scored again through Trout but was cleared off the line. Colligan wrapped it up for Mt Albert when a Murphy through ball landed between Baldwin and Hubbard and headed home from close range.

Coach Jim Evans was disappointed with the result "It was a funny game - we had enough chances to score six but we cant defend like that as a team against anyone as we will keep coming up with the same result. With Colin Murphy back from the USA and Jared Colligan both playing their first game for Mt Albert they have plenty of options in attack and should actually give Three Kings a fight for the championship if they can catch up with them. With some of our players missing, we actually played alright but we were just beaten by a better team. Derek Sinclair was our man of the match"

Team: Justin Baldwin, Scott Petersen (Caine Robbie 85), Jerry Hubbard (vc), Grant Muckle, Danny Baldwin, Vaughan Banfield, Cody Ralph, Sam van Pomeron, Wayne Trout, Derek Sinclair, Charlie Heather (Jesse Smythe Kirk 70)
