Waiuku lose in the dark

Waiuku went down to Western Springs in a midweek game that was played at Seddon Fields. The pitch was an intriguing one with no grass on it at all and the lights not covering the entire pitch but it was the same for both sides as Springs looked for revenge.

Waiuku kept the same formation and playing team as the win they gained on the Saturday against the same rivals while Springs brought back Sebastian Follas who was suspended in the weekend. Springs put plenty of pressure on Waiuku giving them no time on the ball and this created opportunities for their attacking line. Springs took the lead within 20 minutes as Jerry Hubbard tried to play a header back to goalkeeper Justin Baldwin but Follas intercepted the ball and slotted into the back of the net. Waiuku didnt really threaten the Springs goal but did come close on a couple of occasions however the Springs goalkeeper saved easily.

The first 15 minutes proved decisive for Springs and Follas ended up with a hatrick and Bryan Pepper added a fourth after some comical defending at the back. Brett Zinzan came on for Kenny Nicoll and Joe Rayson for Jesse Smyth Kirk and Waiuku's fortunes changed. Waiuku started to dominate in the midfield and Danny Baldwin and captain Cody Ralph got into the game. Baldwin got the ball free on the right and his far post cross was volleyed home by Ralph. Then Ralph got free on the left but the ball just evaded Wayne Trout and another goal went begging. However Baldwin had the last say in the game with a goal directly from the corner after the ball was probably not picked up by the Springs keeper in the dark. Final score 4-2 to Springs

Coach Jim Evans was disappointed with the teams defending "We cant expect to pick up three points with soft defending. Well done to Springs for putting pressure on us and creating chances. Waiuku didnt turn up until the last 25 minutes and we paid the price. Sam van Pomeron in the midfield was everywhere for us and gets man of the match"

Team: Justin Baldwin, Dale Oliver, Ken Nicoll (Brett Zinzan 55), Grant Muckle, Jerry Hubbard (vc), Sam van Pomeron, Derek Sinclair, Cody Ralph (c), Danny Baldwin, Wayne Trout, Jesse Smyth Kirk (Joe Rayson 65)

Subs not used: Robert Thornton, Stuart Ruddell, Charlie Heather
