Waiuku bowed out at the Massey Park fortress with a good win over Mt Albert. Waiuku were nearly full strength apart from Brett Zinzan who was in hospital looking after his brand new born baby who was having complications. For Brett, Waiuku went out in search of three points. That and the opportunity for Waiuku to make a charge for mid table.
After their narrow lost to Ellerslie on Tuesday night 3-2, where if it wasnt for the Ellerslie keeper Waiuku would of won 10-3, the game at Massey Park was a must win. Waiuku were by far the best team in the first half. When a ball from Danny Baldwin foiled the Mt Albert defence, the keeper just kept it out with a left hand side although the rebound fell to Sinclair who slotted from 1 metre. Waiuku pushed forward looking for a second and came close on a couple of occasions. Mark Baldwin up front was laying a solid platform for the midfield and wingers and Cody Ralph and Wayne Trout came close to increasing the lead. However like Cambridge a couple of weeks ago Waiuku went into the halftime break 1-0 up.
Then Mt Albert came out fighting. For the next twenty minutes it was Mt Albert and they equalised in the 70th minute when Jon McGrinder beat the Waiuku defence and slotted past Justin Baldwin in goal to draw level. Waiuku then fought back. Jamie Pegg pushed up on the right but he drew his shot just wide with his left foot. Then Danny Baldwin got free on the right and his cross met Ralph who shot narrowly wide and Ralph repaid the favour but his cross wasnt on target and sailed between the keeper and Danny Baldwin. Sam van Pomeron fed the ball through to Sinclair who ran towards goal however the Mt Albert defender upended him and the referee pointed to the spot. Ralph stepped up and made it 2-1 Waiuku. Jon McGrinder appealed to the ref and was shown his second yellow card and was sent from the field.
Ralph nearly made it three when a ball from Danny Baldwin was inch perfect but his shot was cleared off the line. Then Jesse Smyth Kirk also went close but was called offside however Waiuke finished 2-1 winners
Coach Jim Evans was happy to win the last home game of the year. "It is nice to get the three points and we have deserved them against Cambridge and Ellerslie but now we have them. We were the better team out there today and not only were we playing for the Waiuku supporters but for Brett Zinzan who was in hospital with his brand new baby. Our wishes go out to him and Jenna today and we got the three points for them. Man of the match was Sinclair but I was impressed with Pegg and Baldwin also."
